In Appreciation - Recital Benefit for Mount Shasta Recreation District

Shasta Taiko's Saturday evening recital October 25th benefitting the Mt. Shasta Recreation District was a tremendous success. Shasta Taiko student's inspired performances were appreciated by the packed Mt. Shasta City Park Main Building, and the audience donated generously. Among the highlights that evening was the demonstration by the children's class led by Julie Bennett.

Shasta Taiko wishes to thank all who attended and express its deep gratitude to MSRD for the support and encouragement over the years. A healthy community is reflected in its art and recreational opportunities. We often take our parks, recreation facilities, and programs for granted. Mt. Shasta is fortunate to have an outstanding one.

Sincerly,

Russel Baba & Jeanne Mercer

ShastaYama 2014 Guest Artists

ShastaYama 2014 will be a special gathering of many of the leading artists and pioneers of taiko. Each year, ShastaYama is making history with the presentation of taiko's outstanding artists. ShastaYama 2014 will showcase a wide variety of music and art with original creative work that honors the traditions.

Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka is the most influential individual in the development of traditional and modern taiko in America and around the world. Tanaka Sensei is considered the "Father of American Taiko." He received America's highest honors in folk and traditional arts with a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship. Japan awarded the Foreign Ministers Commendation to him for "his significant efforts in promoting the Japanese art of Taiko."

Master Kenny Endo is a major leader in taiko's development. Endo Sensei lived in Japan for over 10 years studying and performing "hogaku hayashi" (classical music), "matsuri bayashi" (festival music), and "kumi daiko(group drumming), and is the first non-Japanese national and foreigner to receive a "natori" (stage name & master's license) in "hogaku hayashi."

Masato Baba, Michelle Fujii, and Toru Watanabe are recognized as leading influential taiko artists and perennial favorite guests at ShastaYama and represent the new generation of taiko artists.

Jeanne Mercer, Russel Baba, and Kenny Endo started taiko training under Grand Master Tanaka, and Masato Baba started taiko with Shasta Taiko and later studied with Master Endo. Michelle Fujii started with San Joes Taiko and is now the Artistic Director for Portland taiko. With Portland Taiko, Toru Watanabe and Michelle Fujii are influencing taiko development with their extensive backgrounds in Japanese folk dance.
